ಹಣೆಬರಹ (Destiny)

Destiny
I am here since I know to think. We were many of us who grew together sharing the sunlight, soil and water we got. But few of them lost their lives recently when men axed their stem. I thought even I was going to be killed, but it was a thin escape. In the place where my friends lived, men have made what they call as ‘road’. Now I have made friendship with trees on the other side of road. We murmur to each other when wind blows. We initially wondered why man is building this road. Now we see lot of people moving on it.
People travel here so fast, recently a huge vehicle carrying sand knocked a man coming from opposite side. My friends on the other side told me the man was bleeding; they could only help him by blowing more air. This is a common complaint here; Daily one friend or other say that, they saw a man in motor hitting either dogs or fellow men. We always wonder where the road is taking the people, that they do not mind killing others to reach there.
Amongst the men who take rest under my shadow, or boys who pelt stones at my fruits, I like this small girl and her brother. Their house is only a few yards away from me. They spend lot of time playing under my shadow, appreciating birds on my branches, or collecting fruits fallen from my branch. Never have these kids thrown stone at me.
Today I overheard their parents talk that they should vacate their shed as the road is going to be widened. I felt they were hinting my death. When I brought the news to the notice of my friends they all let a painful sigh. The whole environment was misty in some time. May be it was our tears……
Contemplating the news for a whole day, we decided not to let the fear of death rule us. We have decided to bore more fruits and flowers, letting our seeds disperse in air. Before we die we should make sure our children find a safe place to live in and our species survives. I should not let my fruits fall down when people throw stones at me. Instead, may be I can give more fruits to the girl and his brother. They can plant my seed near their new home and take care of it. I can trust them more than anyone else. When I heard the news, I got a thought, how the growth of a dead thing like road can bring death to living thing like us!! I am still thinking!

Stomach filled artist...

Yesterday I had went to a 'Bharatanatyam' program. The program was kept by an organisation, whose responsibilities are looked after by a lady. She had called the well known dancer 'Prathiba Prahalad' for giving the program. The dancer after 'Ganesha Stuti' by vocalist, came to stage and told to audience, that she is disappointed with the number of people who have come to see the show, the lighting arrangements at the stage. She was not willing to perform and even if she performs it would not be a best performance of hers, as she had not danced in such stage for more than 25 years. Then she called the audience seated at the back to come front (just as our college professors would do) and gave some instructions to a person about lights on the stage.

Actually, I felt the auditorium was filled 3/4. But the hall was small to hold less than 100 people. I did not see any problem with lighting from the audience perspective. Donno, what problem she faced with the lights even before she entered the stage. I may be too amateur to comment about these. ( In fact, a hall size, strength there, depends on how much the sponsors of program can afford.) I felt, the above said problem of hers was to be discussed with the organisers and should not be brought till audience and creating a scene. Anyways, later she danced, but ...

I was thinking of a situation where I had gone to watch a Yakshagana program and the well known artist, ' Sri Shambhu Hegde' had refused to give program. It was a government program from forest dept. It was inter-state cultural festival arranged for some publicity, whose details I don't remember exactly. It was in 1990's. The Yakshagana program slot was at 6:00 p.m, but by the time the ministers and other guests left the stage after speech, it was 9:00 p.m. It was a one hour program and Ravindra Kalkshetra was supposed to be emptied by 10:00 p.m. After Yakshagana started, it seems the troupe got instructions many times to finish it as early as possible. On top to it, very embarrassing situation happened, where two guys from other state (may be they were drunk) continuously started making noises which could distract the audience n artists. The way they behaved was bad and irritating for everybody in the hall. Somehow, everybody was waiting for 'somebody' to send them out or scold them. Then finally irritated with all these 'Shambhu Hegde' came straight to mike and said they are winding off because of bad audience and organisers. He said with a big namaskara to the Govt, not to call them for such programs again. Some one among audience stood up and blasted those noisy guys for stopping the program and others joined him. After struggle for fifteen minutes we could come out of the crowd and when we were at vehicle parking, we could see yakshagana troupe, putting the luggage to the vehicle for their return journey to North Canara.

I feel an artist can miss the opportunity of performing and can reject his program on stage only when he faced some extreme conditions like this. That day every Yakshagana lover there felt Shambhu Hegde did right. But if an artist says I want to cancel program with not good reasons, I feel it only indicates that 'their stomach is filled', or they have forgotten the footsteps they came from if they had longed for a stage or opportunity to perform. I am sorry if this blog is looking as if I had some personal grudge over 'Prathiba Prahalad' , and I am using this blog to expose it. I was just trying to say along with talent if artists are humble, generous and understanding, audience and organisers can appreciate them more.

There are people in Yakshagana field also who act as if they are in menopause stage. Probably, if the attitude of few of our well known dancers improves than what it is today, the arts would have more glorious period. What say?

Gruhabanga

Hi all,

Wanted to share with you all about a book which sat in my mind for more than 15 days when I finished reading. Probably after a long time I read a book which impressed me so much. It is S.L.Byrappa's novel 'Gruhabanga'. The book was first published more than 20 years back. I got a chance to read it recently. The novel is said to be autobiography to Byrappa, though it is not mentioned any where.

I had seen few episodes of the serial taken by Girish Kasarvalli (if I remember right) which came in ETV. The serial had come out very well. I was impressed by acting of Lakshmi Chandrashekar, Malavika, Lohitasva, Shivram, chenniga, appana (do not know the name actors who played it). While reading book I could personify the characters with these people. The novel is picturise the life of people of Hassan and surrounding areas, from 1920's to 1950's.

Probably after reading the novel, I understood what does 'struggle for life' mean. The family in the story faces difficulties like famine, plague, war. These difficulties are well blended with the selfishness of the priests, patels and other powerful people of the village. The family I told above is mother with her 3 children, with her husband and mother-in-law last to face problems and first to make profit of a situation. In the whole book, the character of the mother is well built. She always thinks of what best she can do to come out of every worst situation she is in, instead of lamenting.

I was moved by her determination in one situation, where she would have married her daughter out of great difficulty to a nice guy and even before she goes to her husband's house plague would have attacked her. It gradually spreads to her second son, on whom she would have kept high hopes of educating him and bringing him up to a high position. In spite of all the medicines she gives, the kids die. The people who come back after burning the bodies do not find her in house. Few people think she would have attempted to suicide and starts searching near water bodies... But she would have come to a temple where her third kid is lying with initial stages of plague.
The novel has many such situations where she reacts with a very different state of mind than what I expected.

Probably if you are a person like me who get defeated even with small losings in life, we can get inspired by this... Happy weekend!!

Dignity of employees!

Hi all,

A photo in today's Deccan Herald caught my attention. They had put a photo of senior Sub Inspector doing dips. It was punishment given to him for not maintaining his motorcycle!!! God knows what did the senior officials mean by 'maintaining motor cycle' and what did that Sub Inspector guy did to his motor cycle! [No further info was given in paper too.]

If punishment is required, give it in your office boss!! Why allow press ppl to take photo's of it and allow them publish in newspapers? Wanted publicity and some 'visista seva award' kind of stuff??!!

I also remember a police constable called by 'son-of-a *****' kind of words in a circle for some minor mistake in controlling people. I agree they are doing risky jobs and minor mistake can takes lives. But learning can be better done when taught in smooth words than humiliating like this in public! After all nobody wants to do mistake in their jobs knowingly!

I feel police and military people are doing thankless jobs. The senior management of these areas seriously needs some counselling on handling junior employees. Our government do not revise their salary, nor give incentives to make them feel proud of their work! :( And on top of it if this is the behaviour of the upper management, how can people survive in these depts or new people join these departments? When is this going to get corrected?
